Sunny

Lovely warm sunny weather today, as it has been for a week or so. Unfortunately this means many weeds are germinating. Cut the grass on the paths. Improves the look of the plot instantly. Hoed the squash bed, brassica bed, peas/beans and flowers.

I removed the remaining kale and cabbage which had fully run to seed and put on flowers. Would have liked to leave them for the bees but I don't really have the space. Took a crop of the tender leaves off them and dug them out. I dug this over and cleared out the weeds.

The onions and shallots have finally put on some green, the ones I saved over from last years crop are doing better than the bought sets.

The mizuna and pak choi are showing, bit uneven. Though this may be due to the ground having a thin crust, stopping the later ones from pushing through. I watered them. Hope they ok.
Sowed more cos and red salad bowl lettuce and more radish.
Lifted the remaining chicory roots, some were 40cm + and a good 10cm across at the top. Next to this the first peas I sowed direct are pushing through, I have some home sowed ones to go in shortly. The other 2 outdoor sowings under wigwams have yet to show.

Along the edge of the squash bed I put in two rows (2.5m each) of parsnips. It was mix of regular seed and some I'd chitted at home.

Also filled two tubs one large and one smaller with a mixture of home-made compost, soil and sand and sowed some chartenay carrots and in the smaller tub some boltardy beetroots. These are not main-crops but quick ones (hopefully).

The broadbeans have started to flower, lots of bees about, the plums are starting to blossom too. Looks very nice.

Lots of birds today, which makes a nice change, greenfinches chasing each other around the plot, while the crows down the road seemed to be arguing about their nests.
