Small window of non-rain today, so much digging done. The front left bed to be brassicas, dug over, I seemed to have missed a fair bit of garlic (it was very weedy when lifted), and it's grown a lot bigger, but is soft, due to frosts and to much water I assume. As ever copious amounts of couch grass, not many docks. Worryingly much more mares tail.

The fruit area is sort of finished and in here the two rhubarb crowns went in, in the compost they were potted in. The ground here is heavy, as it's not been cultivated (by me at least) for anything other than fruit bushes and raspberry canes. I hope the rhubarb survives. I may spread the contents of heap no. 1 over this area as a mulch, and let the worms incorporate it.

The half bed for shallots done. The other half still has greens and kale standing and will have peas later. The ground for onions had cabbage in it and they break the soil up very well indeed, almost as good as spuds.

Starting digging the bed for celeriac and witloof but I only completed two thirds as it started to get dark.

Not many birds about today, only a couple of crows and magpies and a dunnock.

Heavy Weather

Compost from No 1 Heap, a few woody bits but quite good.

It will not stop raining, so I have not been able to do any more digging as the ground is too wet.

Instead of weeding and digging over I dug out some compost from heap number one, put this over the cut down witloof and covered with upturned plastic boxes, to force the remainder in situ.

I had bought some rhubarb crowns to plant out but I couldn't plant them as the spot chosen needs a dig and compost adding, potted them up at home, hope they will be ok.

Leek seedlings showing now. Spuds chitting ok.
